Jammu History

Jammu laced with snow-covered mountain ranges has a geographical boundary shared by neighbouring countries like Afganisthan, China and Pakistan. During the ancient time, this beautiful land served as a prime caravan route. Because of trade relations, this region was filled with people belonging to various cultural and religious groups.

The Mughals gave a shape to this land and left a deep impact over it. Various reforms in the revenue industry actually took the region on the path of progress. It was Maharaj Gulab Singh, the founder of Dogra dynasty who received the Jagir in 1820 from Maharaj Ranjit Singh. When Maharaj Gulab Singh received Kashmir in 1846, the two areas of Kashmir and Jammu got merged into one political unit. There was marked improvement in the field of trade and in preservation of forestry during the Dogra dynasty. Art and crafts also flourished. After India got independence in 1947, this region a part of Hunza Indian territory has preserved the spirit of unity and integrity of India.
